Peacock Mantis shrimp. One of the largest and most colorful mantis shrimps, these guys create burrows in the rubble of the reef. They hunt with lightning-fast strikes of their powerful forearms, stunning and smashing their prey. Mantis shrimps have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom, with thousands of individual ommatidia (like a dragonfly eye). The tiny black dots on the eyes are the only ommatidia looking directly at the camera - the light reflects directly back from them, looking black. Tough to sneak up on a mantis shrimp.
